Simón Cruz shows his pride for our country by wearing a cap signifying that he’s a WWII army veteran. He is the only remaining WWII veteran who attends the Good Samaritan Center, a partner of the Food Bank.

Once a month, Mr. Cruz receives a generous portion of groceries from the Food Bank through the Project H.O.P.E. program.  Seniors who are recipients of this program are given commodities such as rice, beans, cereal, and canned items. It is intended for the groceries to provide meals for an entire month.

Many of our seniors face crippling debt and limited food resources once they reach retirement. We work rigorously to ensure that hunger is never a consequence of low budgets for food. The Food Bank collaborates with more than 500 partner agencies in San Antonio to distribute essential grocery items to our seniors in need.

A close friend prepares a home-cooked meal for Mr. Cruz every night using the groceries from the Project H.O.P.E. food box. He is grateful for the opportunity to enjoy meals every night using the recipes he’s eaten his whole life.

This month he will be celebrating his 90th birthday. He plans to spend the day with his family, talking over a home-cooked meal.

The Food Bank is proud to serve to those who have served our country, especially with a warm home-cooked meal.
