Food-Insecurity Can Affect Anyone

Food insecurity can be temporary or ongoing, shaped by circumstances that can change over time. A job loss, unexpected expense, natural disaster, or rising household costs can make it harder for a family to put food on the table. Sometimes, a neighbor simply needs a little help making the groceries stretch until the next paycheck.

That’s why our work reaches beyond circumstances to provide nourishment and resources to neighbors when and where needed.

Children

All children in our community need consistent access to nutritious food to grow, learn, and thrive.

Challenges To Food Access

  • Gaps When School Is Out: For many children, school meals provide an important source of daily nourishment. Weekends, holidays and summer break can create gaps when those meals aren’t available.
  • Economic Hardship: For households facing financial strain, putting enough nutritious food on the table can be difficult. In our region, 1 in 4 children live in households experiencing poverty, making consistent access to nutritious food more challenging.

Seniors

After a lifetime of work, family and service to their communities, many older adults live on fixed or limited incomes.

Challenges To Food Access

  • Rising Housing & Healthcare Costs: As housing, utilities, and healthcare costs increase, some older adults may face difficult choices between food and other essential needs.
  • Fixed or Limited Income: Living on a fixed income can leave little flexibility when unexpected expenses arise, making it harder to consistently afford nutritious food.

Working Adults

Balancing jobs, childcare and other household expenses, for many even a steady paycheck isn’t enough to keep pace with the rising cost of everyday life.

Challenges To Food Access

  • The Assistance Gap: Some working households earn just above the eligibility threshold for federal assistance programs while still struggling to afford rising costs for housing, childcare and groceries.
  • Unexpected Disruptions: Reduced hours, seasonal work, or an unexpected loss of income can quickly strain a household budget—even when someone remains employed.

Veteran & Military Families

Serving our country doesn’t make a household immune to hardship. We’re committed to supporting these neighbors through the unique transitions and challenges that can affect food access.

Challenges To Food Access

  • Transitions & Relocation: Deployments, frequent moves and transitions out of military service can disrupt household income, benefits and access to familiar support systems.
  • Service-Connected Challenges: Service-connected disabilities or injuries, including those that aren’t always visible, can affect a household’s financial stability and make consistent access to nutritious food more difficult.

Unhoused

Some neighbors in our community are experiencing homelessness or housing instability often because of circumstances that can change quickly and unexpectedly. Access to nutritious food can become even more difficult when a stable place to live is uncertain.

  • Housing Instability: Job loss, health challenges, rising housing costs, or the loss of a loved one can make it difficult to maintain stable housing, even for neighbors who previously had financial stability.
  • Limited Access to Food: Without reliable access to a kitchen, refrigerator or transportation, preparing and storing nutritious food can present additional challenges.

A crisis can change a household’s circumstances overnight.

Challenges To Food Access

  • Unexpected Expenses: A major repair, medical bill or other unplanned expense can quickly stretch a household budget, leaving less available for groceries.
  • Disasters & Emergencies: Severe weather, displacement and other emergencies can disrupt access to food, damage household supplies or create unexpected costs when families are already facing uncertainty.
  • Loss of Income: Job loss, reduced hours or other disruptions to household income can make it difficult to keep up with essential expenses, including food.
