The 13th annual Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign returned this spring, bringing together customers, associates, suppliers, and community partners to help fight hunger across Southwest Texas.

From April 6 through May 3, shoppers at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations had multiple ways to support the San Antonio Food Bank, including donating at checkout, rounding up purchases online, and purchasing participating products that help generate meals for local families facing hunger.

The San Antonio Food Bank currently serves more than 105,000 neighbors each week across its 29-county service area. Last year alone, the Food Bank distributed more than 74 million meals throughout Southwest Texas.

This year’s campaign highlighted the important role Walmart and Sam’s Club associates play in helping connect communities with food and resources during difficult times.

Sandra Ponce, Food and Consumable Coach at Walmart’s Spring Branch location, said the campaign resonates deeply because of the growing need she sees in the community every day.

“I think the Spark Change campaign is very important for the community, the city, and the nation because right now it’s hard times for a lot of people,” Ponce shared. “With prices going up and changes to SNAP benefits, a lot of people are having a hard time with that.”

Ponce also emphasized the dedication of store associates who work to ensure edible food reaches families instead of landfills.

“All of my team makes sure to rescue any of the products that are still edible,” she said. “They’d rather see it go to a good cause than go in the trash.”

Throughout the campaign, associates encouraged shoppers to participate through donations and awareness efforts at checkout counters and in-store displays. Associates were encouraged to ask customers to donate at checkout to help support local hunger relief efforts.

We’re deeply grateful to our community and to our partners at Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Feeding America for their ongoing commitment to ending hunger. Together, we’re nourishing our community.
