Lost Food Due to the Storm? SNAP Benefits May Be Replaced

If you receive SNAP benefits and lost food due to the recent storm and power outages, you may be eligible for replacement benefits. Complete Form H1855 and submit it in person at a local HHSC eligibility office within 10 days of discovering your food loss. HHSC staff can help you complete the form and required documentation.

What is SNAP?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly called food stamps, is a government program that provides food benefits to families and individuals to supplement a grocery budget so that nutritious food, essential to health and well-being, is accessible. In Texas, SNAP food benefits are put on a Lone Star Card, which can be used just like a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP benefits.

Am I Eligible For SNAP?

Your household must meet certain requirements to be eligible for SNAP and receive benefits. Eligibility is based primarily on household income and certain expenses. To apply for SNAP benefits, you will need to provide proof of identification, proof of address, proof of income (such as pay stubs, RSDI/SSI, or unemployment benefits), and proof of expenses (such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement).

No. You do not need to be working in order to apply for SNAP. Most people ages 16 to 59 must follow work rules to get SNAP benefits. Work rules mean a person must look for a job or be in an approved work program. Yes. Many non-citizens are eligible for SNAP benefits. Receiving SNAP benefits will have no impact on your application for citizenship and/or a green card. It is safe to contact us to learn more about SNAP benefits. Children born in the US may receive benefits even if their parents do not have documentation.
