Moises’s Story

Moises had a troublesome childhood. As a freshman in high school, he began using drugs to cope with his despair. Soon, drugs took hold of his life and he dropped out of high school. Shortly after dropping out, he met his girlfriend who would one day become his wife.

They were struggling to make ends meet so she suggested Moises go to the San Antonio Food Bank to apply for SNAP– a federal program that provides nutrition benefits to supplement food budgets of families in need. He was embarrassed to go, but loved his girlfriend so much he went to get help. He did not expect that visit to change his entire life.

Moises hesitantly told the staff member in client services his story. When he was finished, he was informed that the Food Bank has resources to help clients get their GEDs as well as other certifications to make them more hirable. Moises was surprised and felt hopeful for his future.

He had no idea that someone of his background could have access to these opportunities.

“I have been working for Thrift City in Leon Valley since I graduated in 2021. This may not sound like much to you, but in life, it is! I see myself advancing year after year, all because the San Antonio Food Bank gave me that one chance to change my life,” Moises said.

Moises was enrolled in GED classes and received OSHA training. In 2021, he received his GED and his Forklift and Warehouse Logistics certification.

“If the San Antonio Food Bank hadn’t treated me with dignity and respect I don’t know where my life would have taken me. Thank you for this – thank you for giving my life back to me,” Moises said.

Moises came to the San Antonio Food Bank for help with food today. He left with resources and training that will enable him to have food for a lifetime. Your support provides a fresh start for Food Bank clients like Moises.
