Summer Meals
For Kids
Mrs. Schmelter’s Story
May 2025
Across Southwest Texas, more than 200,000 children living in low-income households rely on school provided breakfast and lunch. But when school lets out, those meals disappear—leaving many kids facing hunger.
Texas is now ranked second in the nation for food insecurity. 1 in 4 kids in our community this summer will go without the meals they rely on during the school year—leaving a 20 million meal gap.
That’s why your support of the San Antonio Food Bank’s Summer Meals for Kids campaign is so critical. Together, we are Serving Bright Futures by providing nutritious no-cost meals, snacks, and groceries to children who are most at risk when school cafeterias close for the summer.
Educators like Mrs. Schmelter, an ESL teacher at a local middle school, see the difference every meal makes.
“I teach English, but I also teach confidence,” she said. “And food is part of that foundation. A child who eats is a child who believes they can succeed.”
Mrs. Schmelter not only helps her students dream big—she actively works alongside them, advocating for a brighter future. Through food drives and partnerships with the Food Bank, educators like her are building classrooms where students’ dreams aren’t limited by their circumstances.
By supporting the San Antonio Food Bank’s Summer Meals for Kids campaign, you’re not just providing a meal—you’re offering hope, security, and a brighter future for children who would otherwise go without.
