Each January, I reflect on the work the San Antonio Food Bank accomplished over the last year and set new goals for the upcoming year. Fighting hunger is our number one priority, but we also provide programs and services to empower those we serve to gain self-sufficiency and thrive.

Keira and her husband are both hard workers. Keira worked as licensed vocational nurse, but soon she and her husband realized their two salaries weren’t enough to provide for their children. Keira took a second job during the pandemic as a fast-food manager but began to feel strain of working two jobs while raising children.

She wanted a career change with less hours and a better salary but was scared of the risk. While speaking with a friend, she recommended Keira reach out to the San Antonio Food Bank. Keira quickly responded that the Food Bank doesn’t help individuals with jobs, just food. Her friend informed her that she was wrong, so Keira made the call. She learned about our job training programs through the Food Bank and began to rethink her career path.

While working with her Food Bank case manager, she saw that earning her CDL license was an option. As a child, Keira had always been fascinated with trucks and being a truck driver. Keira said, “The San Antonio Food Bank walked me though the process every step of the way. Now I have my CDL license, and I am a full-time truck driver making a great salary! Many people believe that being a truck driver means you’re away from your family weeks at a time, but you can find jobs that allow you to have dinner with your family every night!”

The new year brings optimism and encourages us to make a fresh start. The Food Bank will continue to empower families and individuals through our programs and distributions. Will you help individuals like Keira, make a fresh start in 2023 by contributing today?

With deep gratitude,

Eric S. Cooper
President & CEO

P.S. Giving a fresh start to those like Keira depends on you and your support. Will you make a gift to help families and individuals in the new year, today?
