2025 Spring Newsletter

Message From Our CEO

Spring is a season of renewal, reminding us that new beginnings are always possible. As flowers begin to bloom, they stand as symbols of strength and resilience. Similar qualities can be found in the 105,000 neighbors we serve each week who weather challenging times with courage and determination.

Because of your generosity and compassion, hope is planted in every corner of our service area. From the San Antonio Food Bank to our branches in New Braunfels, Frio County, and San Angelo we are committed to nourishing individuals and families facing hunger across a total of 29 counties in Southwest Texas.

As we continue our vital work in Bexar County and beyond, we know that storms—whether a medical emergency, job loss, rising food costs, or other challenges—can be inevitable for neighbors we serve. Yet, with your continued support, we can help weather them together. Every dollar, every hour volunteered, and every pound of food you donate helps create lasting transformation for Southwest Texans who rely on Food Bank services, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

I want to thank you for your continued compassion and generosity—which is at the root of cultivating stronger and healthier communities, together.

BEXAR & BEYOND

We are community, serving community

Together, we ensure that communities of all sizes across Southwest Texas have access to nutritious food and critical resources. The San Antonio Food Bank and our branches—the New Braunfels Food Bank, Frio County Food Bank, and San Angelo Food Bank—work collectively to serve our neighbors in need.

With your support, we sustain recurring distributions and tailor programs to meet the unique needs of each community, from rural towns to urban centers, ensuring no neighbor goes hungry.

This map highlights the breadth of our service area and the ways we work together to fight hunger across Southwest Texas.

Our Service Territory

Partner Pantries

A partner pantry is a local organization that works with the Food Bank to provide food and essentials to neighbors in need. Pantries help expand food access in communities across the Southwest Texas region.

FOOD BANK BRANCH FACILITY
A branch facility is a regional extension providing local food assistance, community programs, and hunger-relief resources.

MOBILE DISTRIBUTIONS
Recurring mobile distributions bring food directly into communities, increasing food access without having to travel far.

San Angelo Food Bank

Last spring, the San Antonio Food Bank expanded its reach with the launch of the San Angelo Food Bank. Located in the Northwesternmost part of our region, this new branch provides critical support to neighbors across five counties:
Tom Green, Coke, Sterling, Irion, and Concho.

Since opening, the San Angelo Food Bank has strengthened partnerships with 36 local partner pantries and is working toward its goal of distributing nearly 2 million pounds of  food annually. Through partner pantry distributions and recurring mobile food distributions, the branch is increasing access to nutritious meals for households facing hunger.

As the San Angelo Food Bank continues to grow, efforts are underway to secure local resources—food, funds, and volunteers—while also expanding capacity for public benefits outreach and enrollment.

New Braunfels Food Bank

Originally operating as The Kitchen Table, the San Antonio Food Bank opened its first branch facility in 2010 in New Braunfels. Now known as the New Braunfels Food Bank, this branch serves Comal and Guadalupe counties, providing vital resources for neighbors in need and meaningful opportunities for those looking to give back.

The branch features a client-choice pantry, a commercial kitchen that prepares meals for local seniors and children, and dedicated staff who connect individuals with food and essential resources— whether in person or over the phone.
A cornerstone of the community, the New Braunfels Food Bank has been locally voted “The Best Place to Volunteer” for seven consecutive years. Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the pantry, meal preparation, and onsite food distributions.

Supporting South Texas

Spotlight on Cotulla, TX

For more than a decade, Cotulla resident and dedicated San Antonio Food Bank donor Denise Storey has embraced “God’s good gifts” to help nourish families across South Texas. To Denise, giving is an act of stewardship—ensuring resources are used for the “good of all, especially those who can’t work,” including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

The Food Bank has proudly served Cotulla and La Salle County since our founding in 1980. In fact, in recent years, food security initiatives have seen great support from the La Salle County budget and leadership. Nevertheless, food insecurity remains a critical issue, with Feeding America data showing that 1 in 5 La Salle County residents face hunger on any given day.

To combat food insecurity, the Food Bank provides vital support in La Salle County through: supplying food to local pantry partners, hosting twice-monthly mobile distributions in Cotulla and Encinal,  and assisting qualifying individuals with enrollment in public assistance programs like SNAP.

Community support plays a crucial role in sustaining these efforts. In La Salle County, donors like Denise Storey and the County cover the majority of the costs associated with mobile distributions in that region, filling in the gaps not reached by food pantries.

What does it mean to serve Bexar and beyond? It means that each county across the 29-county service area of the San Antonio Food Bank has equitable access to food and similar opportunities to engage in the solution: as financial donors, food donors, or even volunteers.

We are community, serving community.

ANTI-HUNGER ADVOCACY

Federal

Reauthorization of the Farm Bill—one that bolsters the nation’s federal nutrition programs, including The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), continues to be an advocacy priority for the Food Bank, Feeding America, and our sister Food Banks across the country.

State

We are actively advocating alongside Feeding Texas and anti- hunger partners during the 89th Texas Legislature’s regular session, running now through June 2, 2025. Our agenda focuses on improving access to healthy food programs, strengthening workforce development, and ensuring that disaster and emergency food assistance align with community need.

Local

Local government support and funding for the initiatives of the San Antonio, New Braunfels, Frio County and San Angelo Food Banks across branch regions and our entire service territory remain a priority.
