Crystal’s Story

Strengthening Mothers & Families

April 2025

When mothers have the resources to care for their families, entire communities thrive. Yet, food insecurity disproportionately affects mothers, especially those raising children alone. Nationally, nearly one in three households led by single mothers face food insecurity (USDA) —a reality we see firsthand at the San Antonio Food Bank as families turn to us for support, and mothers like Crystal get the relief they need to keep moving forward.

Crystal is a devoted mom of nine who’s always put her children’s education and well-being first. When her husband passed away four years ago, she became the family’s sole provider, working hard to stay afloat. Most months, she makes it work—but when school breaks interrupt meal programs or unexpected bills pop up, feeding her family becomes a challenge.

Woman smiles at camera while loading San Antonio Food Bank branded box of food into her vehicle.

“For the most part, I have it handled,” Crystal says. “But then summer comes along, or there are too many doctor’s visits in one month, and the numbers don’t always add up.”

That’s when she turns to the New Braunfels Food Bank, where our on-site Client Choice Pantry offers fresh produce and pantry staples—ensuring her family has healthy meals, with dignity and choice. When you give, you’re not just providing food. You’re giving a mother stability, a child a brighter future, and a community the strength to rise together.
