Jaden’s Story
January 2024
Fresh Beginnings
Jaden, a 23-year-old father of two, recently celebrated a significant achievement in his life. Having just graduated from the San Antonio Food Bank Culinary Training Program, he found himself equipped with a new set of skills that promised a fresh beginning for his family and career.
The San Antonio Food Bank culinary training program, state-certified by the Texas Workforce Commission and recognized by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation, offers a 10-week advanced curriculum tailored for the culinary industry. For years, the Food Bank’s accredited job training programs have offered a valuable opportunity for neighbors to develop skills and earn industry certifications needed to embark on an up-skilled career and stable future.
Jaden discovered the Food Bank’s job training programs after confronting the challenges of balancing employment across four part-time jobs simultaneously, all in an effort to secure enough hours to provide for his two sons. Throughout the program, Jaden immersed himself in mastering classical culinary knife skills, sauces, and various cooking techniques. Additionally, the training extends beyond the kitchen, delving into professional aspects such as recipe writing, costing, and menu design and development.
“Before I started this culinary class, I didn’t know what my next steps in life would will be… We learned to be more than line cooks – we were taught to become chefs. Thank you for allowing me to grow, and especially opening doors of opportunity. The program provided me with not just a skill set; it offered a pathway to sustainable and industry-aligned employment opportunities. I am ready to start on a promising career in the culinary world.”
Jaden emerged from the program with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement about his future.
Jaden reflects on how training at the Food Bank has not only enhanced his technical skills but also fueled his passion for culinary arts within his community. The prospect of working for a non-profit specializing in community assistance appeals to him, offering an opportunity to contribute to the well-being of others while showcasing his culinary talents.
After graduating from the San Antonio Food Bank Culinary Training Program, a resilient individual, ready to make his mark on the culinary world and provide a better future for his family, has been cultivated. Jaden is scheduled to embark on his new job and a fresh beginning at a local non-profit in January 2024.
