The San Antonio Food Bank’s volunteer opportunities range from our sorting room, warehouse, garden and farm areas, our community kitchen, and even our off-site community kitchen at Haven for Hope. Whether you’re an individual, group, or company there are many opportunities to volunteer.

From our sorting room to our garden, the San Antonio Food Bank offers several different ways you can serve!

YEAR ROUND

WAREHOUSE SORTING & PACKING

Groups and individuals work together to sort and/or pack produce, nonperishable foods, and household items, preparing them for distribution. Duties may include checking for expiration dates, opened packages and spoilage, labeling cans, packing bags of food and household items.

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
Who: Up to 65 volunteers (Weekdays), Up to 200 volunteers (Saturdays)
Age Requirement: Minimum Age is Flexible with adult supervision.
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse environment.

SAN ANTONIO FOOD BANK – COMMUNITY KITCHEN

This program prepares and distributes breakfast and after school snacks to schools and partner agencies. Volunteers will receive a briefing on the day’s meals to be distributed to Kid’s Cafe sites, issue and document the pick-up of meals, load meals into hot/cold holding containers, accurately document times that meals were picked up, and that equipment was issued and returned. Volunteers will also assist with kitchen cleanup duties as requested by the Executive Chef:  wash, sanitize and store kitchen tools and equipment, prep for next day’s meal and store supplies as needed.

HAVEN FOR HOPE – COMMUNITY KITCHEN

Volunteers assist with the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for residents of Haven for Hope. Other kitchen duties include, but not limited to:  all aspects of kitchen clean up; dishwashing, sweeping, mopping. Volunteers will also greet the residents as they arrive for their meals.  Help people experiencing homelessness in our community!

MOBILE APPLE CORPS VOLUNTEER

Would you like to help some of the most vulnerable people of your community? Then apply for the Mobile Apple Corps Delivery Program. Volunteers participating in our Mobile Apple Corps Volunteer Delivery Program will deliver perishable and non-perishable food items directly to the homes of seniors in our community.

Interested volunteer drivers will deliver to 4 households for 2-3 hours once a month. Drivers will also be provided with orientation and training as well as tracking your mileage for deductions if they wish.

Age Requirement: 18 years of age
Additional Requirements: Must be willing to allow a criminal background check performed by the San Antonio Food Bank (separate link will be emailed). Drivers must provide proof of a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.

SAN ANTONIO FOOD BANK – URBAN FARM

This is a 40+ acre working garden, cultivating fresh produce to provide healthy, nutritious fresh foods for distribution. Volunteers work as a group to assist the farmer with planting, harvesting, caring for, and cleaning fruits, vegetables, and other edible plants. Other duties may include composting, weeding, digging, hoeing and watering in the field. At times assistance is needed with landscape and property clean up.

Age Requirement: No age restriction. Volunteers under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

MISSION SAN JUAN FARM

In a unique partnership with the National Park Service, we manage 45 acres of crops at Mission San Juan. In addition, 5 acres act as a historic demonstration garden to educate Mission visitors. We use irrigation from the 300 year old acequia, replicating the traditional farming methods of the Mission inhabitants.

Who: Up to 25 volunteers (Larger groups can be accommodated with advance notice.)
Age Requirement: No age restriction. Volunteers under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. **The National Park Service requires a parent/guardian complete a Volunteer Agreement for volunteer under 18 years of age in order to volunteer on-site.
Dress Code: For safety, absolutely no sandals or flip-flops, please wear closed-toed shoes. Dress for the weather. Volunteers may want to bring gloves.

NEW BRAUNFELS FOOD BANK – KITCHEN TABLE

Individuals have the opportunity to assist Kitchen Table staff in restocking and arranging edible and non-edible items for client choice pantry, creating emergency baskets for clients, checking dates as instructed, assisting clients with shopping and taking items to vehicle if necessary, managing the front desk, and other warehouse duties.

View New Braunfels Food Bank – Kitchen Table Opportunities

MOBILE PANTRY VOLUNTEER

Volunteers assist the Mobile Pantry Coordinator by breaking down pallets of product, packing bags if necessary and handing out product to clients. Volunteers will also collect vouchers from clients and help with traffic control, verify clients have vouchers before receiving product, if a client does not have a voucher then qualify client and assisting them with voucher, as directed. Duties will also include cleaning up the area and stacking pallets and trash into truck. Events usually last around 3-4 hours. Get a group of 5-10 volunteers together to help distribute groceries where they are needed!

AGENCY STORE VOLUNTEER

Assist Agency Relations staff in restocking and arranging edible and non-edible food items. Checking dates as instructed. Other warehouse duties include, but not limited to: sweeping, trash pickup, mopping and general clean-up of work areas.

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES VOLUNTEER

Volunteers are needed for a variety of administrative tasks including internet research, letter folding, stapling pamphlets, data entry, answering phones, etc.  Your skills can help the staff in valuable ways!

APPLE CORPS – VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Lead tours of our facility and provide general information about the Food Bank’s programs and services. On a daily basis, teach, lead and mentor volunteers for warehouse sorting projects of up to 65 volunteers.  This position requires an outgoing personality and experience working with diverse populations including persons with special needs. Excellent verbal and motivational communication skills are needed. A willingness to speak in public and must be professional at all times. This opportunity is perfect for retirees and students that are off for the summer & holidays. **Requires prescreening and willingness to make at least a three month commitment to a regular schedule.

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM (JUNE – AUGUST)

This program prepares and distributes breakfast, lunch, and snacks for children on summer vacation. Volunteers will receive a briefing on the day’s meal(s) to be distributed to Summer Food Service Program sites; issue and document Summer Food Service Program meals, load meals into hot/cold holding containers; accurately document times that meals were picked-up, equipment was returned and issued; wash, clean, sanitize & store kitchen tools, containers & equipment. Assist with general pick-up/clean-up as needed & requested by Executive Chef: wash, sanitize and store kitchen tools and equipment, prep for next day’s meal, sweep, mop and store supplies as needed.
