Despite facing significant health challenges and enduring three heart attacks since 2005, Stephan’s journey has been marked by resilience and compassion. For 35 years, he dedicated his life to serving his community as a compassionate funeral director, providing solace during times of loss. However, when health issues left him unable to work or volunteer, his life took a different turn.

Facing adversity, Stephan found solace and companionship in the form of his two beloved cats, Lucy and Ethel. His beloved cats are not just pets; they are family, offering comfort during rough times.

The San Antonio Food Bank’s pet food assistance programs have been a resource for keeping Stephan’s family together and nourished. As 1 in 5 seniors choose between feeding themselves, their families, or accessing much needed medication, the provision of cat food by the San Antonio Food Bank is a direct contribution to Stephan’s well-being, recognizing that the care of his pets is inseparable from his own.

“I’ve been a hard worker all my life. But after these medical conditions and being left with no strength, I can’t work or volunteer… The Food Bank’s generosity has been a lifeline, not just for me but also for my cherished feline companions. When I see my cats every day, they bring me strength, they help me live in the present, and they give me purpose,” he shared with gratitude.

Battling ongoing medical issues, Stephan understands the significance of wholesome and healthy nutrition in his journey of self-care. The Food Bank has not only assisted him in applying for SNAP but has also been a lifeline through food distributions and senior home deliveries, ensuring that he receives the ongoing nourishment needed for his physical well-being.
