“I am glad they were able to see and try new things they would never have seen if they had not visited the San Antonio Food Bank.”

The San Antonio Food Bank welcomed with open arms Northside ISD first graders from Powell Elementary. Nickalina Subia, a teacher at Powell Elementary School had heard the food bank offers tours and decided to reach out directly to get more information. She sent an email to her principal about the great educational experience the kids were sure to have and was thankful when the field trip was approved.

The students arrived on a chilly Friday morning eager to see what the food bank had in store and were thrilled to step on the grounds. The children divided into smaller groups and rotated through several activities around the food bank.

Students participated in a scavenger hunt, testing their farm IQ as they made their way around the sustainable garden. The children checked off items such as vegetables, soilless planting, the greenhouse and the DaisyCares barn and animals.

A member of the San Antonio Food Bank Nutrition, Health and Wellness program (Food IQ) demonstrated how to make a yummy broccoli quesadillas. Though some students weren’t thrilled about this vegetable quesadilla, they were more than willing to try something new and to their surprise they loved it.

Another fun and knowledgeable experience was taking a hayride to the 25-acre Urban Farm where they saw rows of our “fall” crops including broccoli and romanesco cauliflower. Students were able to get their hands on the enticing green cauliflower as they had never seen one before.

“It was a unique outdoor learning experience for them,” said Subia, “a great way to see how food is produced and used at the San Antonio Food Bank. I am glad they were able to see and try new things they would never have seen if they had not visited the food bank.”

The San Antonio Food offers many educational experiences from hydroponics, agriculture and animal welfare.
