Annette’s Story
Annette is a veteran who served in two wars — Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. After her honorable discharge, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University, became a mother, and due to her combat experiences, began to struggle with mental health. This made working a steady job difficult for her. As a single mom, she was struggling more than ever. “I never thought as a war veteran I would have so many struggles these past few years.”
Now with rising inflation, Annette is having to make the impossible choice between paying bills and buying food. “Wages aren’t raising with inflation. A trip to the grocery store can deplete your bank account. The San Antonio Food Bank helps during these times. The food we receive offers us hope when I think no one is there.”
Although times are tough, the skills Annette gained through her time in the military carry her forward. “What I loved most about serving my country was learning I had the bravery and focus to help others in combat.” Annette continues to be brave, making sure her daughter is supported. The San Antonio Food Bank is here to help individuals like Annette support their families through the current inflation crisis.
