The Power of Work & Food

At the San Antonio Food Bank, our integrated programs and services work together to effectively serve our community. Your gift not only supports us in training and building self-sufficiency, but provides much needed meals for our neighbors.

The Power of Work – Tonya Horton

Our culinary training program teaches the necessary skills our trainees need to be successful in the job market, increasing their self-sufficiency. A portion of their training is an internship where they prepare nutritious meals for neighbors in our community.

The Food Bank culinary program trained me in the fundamentals of cooking, in a hands-on education environment. Being raised in the foster care system, and growing up without a family, I believe the meals I am cooking become a sense of hope to others in our community. This has a special meaning to me.

Meals prepared in our Food Bank kitchen are then distributed through several of our programs, including one of our senior home delivery programs.

The Power of Food – Diana

Diana is a loving mother and grandmother who has worked hard her entire life. Two years ago, she learned she was diabetic and over time she began to lose sight in both her eyes. Struggling with diabetes, she was forced to move closer to her sister who lived in an apartment complex. It was there she received food from a Food Bank distribution.

She was able to get nutritious food, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, that helped her to heal and control her diabetes. She was eventually signed up for home delivery services.

“The San Antonio Food Bank gave me my health back by bringing me nutritious and healthy foods. Thanks to them, my family and I will be able to enjoy a healthy Thanksgiving meal.”

Serving more than 100,000 people per week, and with inflation, this is officially our most expensive Thanksgiving on record. I humbly ask for your biggest gift possible this Thanksgiving season. Our community needs heroes. Our community wants to work and needs to eat. Your donation today provides two wins – food and jobs, and we need it more than ever.
