Brenda’s Story
You may have seen the good news: nearly every adult who can work in the city is back to work, with our unemployment trending toward the lowest level in years. You may not, however, have seen the bad news: the Food Bank is serving record numbers of individuals with food, as inflation (rents, utilities, food, and gas) remains significantly higher than wages. With Thanksgiving approaching, the Food Bank is rising up to ensure every family can provide a nutritious meal for their loved ones, regardless of inflation.
Brenda Sauceda is a loving mother and grandmother. When her daughter recently passed away, she found her herself taking on the role of both grandmother and mother. “When my daughter passed, my immediate action was to make sure I got full custody of my 2 grandchildren. I had to start all over, carrying diaper bags and trying to find the energy to do what needed to be done.”
Brenda’s husband has worked as a lineman for 23 years. “With small children to raise, I went to the State to get support, but was told my husband makes too much money to receive benefits of any kind, but we still needed help badly.” Brenda began searching for ways to get groceries for her family and learned about the San Antonio Food Bank on Facebook. “When I went to my first distribution I felt blessed. There were so many families there I knew that I was not alone in my struggle and that the San Antonio Food Bank was there to help.”
With Thanksgiving on the way, Brenda reflects on how holidays without her daughter are rough, but that a good meal with family provides comfort and joy to her grandchildren. “Taking care of my family honors my daughter, and the food we receive from the Food Bank gives me the help I need. I can’t break down for Thanksgiving. I’m the grandma and I have to create the best experience for them. I have to be that beacon of light. The Food Bank’s support gives me resilience.”
