“The food bank here has been a tremendous help, I get like $80 in food stamps and the majority of my income goes towards rent, if I didn’t have this help I’d be half eating, or eating the wrong stuff.”

First in line, Mary Sherod arrived at 4:30 a.m. to one of our partner agencies, West Avenue Compassion, for a Thanksgiving distribution of food.

“I come here every Tuesday.” says Mary, who moved to Texas three years ago from St. Louis, Missouri.

A neighbor from her apartment complex told Mary and her daughter about West Avenue Compassion and it has made a difference in their lives. Mary is retired and legally blind and cannot drive, so she relies in public transportation to get to her destination.

Being new in town, Mary has made new friends at West Avenue Compassion. She felt welcomed by everyone there and says her Thanksgiving will now be more complete because of all the help.

“I’ve met people here, I don’t really have a lot of friends, I don’t drive; but I’m not moving back to Missouri, I’m staying!”

West Avenue Compassion served 271 families on this day, making a difference in the community for Thanksgiving.
