In a bid to promote healthy living among the senior population, HealthTexas has kicked off a fresh approach by providing free vegetables alongside traditional medical prescriptions. Announced at a special event hosted by HealthTexas in collaboration with Community Medicare Partners, the initiative took place earlier today, offering senior citizens bags of free produce and nutrition education from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Medicare Partners location in Poteet, Texas, according to a report by FOX San Antonio.

The so-called Produce Giveaway event wasn't just a one-off deal, each senior walked away with a take-home bag of seasonal vegetables; while, a licensed agent was also present to discuss health coverage options. HealthTexas wants seniors to bring a friend and sample the fresh produce, though they note supplies are limited and only one free bag is available per person.

Additionally, HealthTexas has teamed up with the San Antonio Food Bank to extend its free produce program. At the HealthTexas Holy Cross Clinic, seniors aged 65 and over can pick up a fresh produce voucher from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. This event also emphasizes the importance of nutritional education, providing seniors with recipes and guidelines for healthy eating.

Only one voucher will be handed out per attendee, ensuring everyone gets their share of the veggie bounty, and yes, participants are encouraged to bring along a friend to partake in the fresh pickings. UnitedHealthcare licensed agents will also be at hand to dish out advice on health-related inquiries, as per KSAT's coverage.

This community-oriented initiative is part of HealthTexas Primary Care Doctors' greater mission, marking 30 years of fostering health and wellness within the local community since its inception in 1994. The primary care network includes over 65 healthcare professionals operating out of 18 clinics in the greater San Antonio area, placing a strong emphasis on patient health and wellness.
