SAN ANTONIO -  When the money stops coming in, the question has to be asked: What do we do now?  San Antonio photographer David Kosub found himself in that exact situation when the COVID-19 pandemic turned a profitable little family business into a collection of cameras, lenses, and photo booth props stored away inside his home.

What You Need To Know

  • Had to seek assistance from San Antonio Food Bank during pandemic

"We have my wife and my son, and we have a few other associates that help out. So, all of us stopped working. I refer to it as a light switch. It just shuts off," said Kosub, referencing the day in March that San Antonio went under shelter-in-place orders.

He is the owner of Photo Video Services. They specialize in weddings, quinceaneras, corporate events and school functions. If you need pictures, Kosub will take them, or at least he did until this past spring.

"Right up until the day before (the shelter-in place order) I said, 'We can't do that. Our world is based on businesses.' The next day it happened, and all of a sudden, what do you do?"said Kosub.

He collects Social Security and his wife is retired. He got a stimulus check from the government, but he perfectly sums up what that means for people that currently have no income.

"The stimulus check was a little icing on the cake, but we're missing the cake," Kosub said.

That's what brought Kosub to the San Antonio Food Bank. Not quite where he envisioned himself stopping for groceries every two weeks, but here he is doing whatever it takes to make sure his family survives.

"Since there is no income right now, the food bank is what's allowing us to continue and makes ends meet, and I use this term loosely: survive. Survive a little easier." he said.

Not the easiest topic to talk about. People are proud. Kosub is proud. But he realizes he's not the only one that needs help right now, and his family and his business will weather the storm.

"We'll make the best of it at the end of the day, and we're going to go and move forward. And next year at this time, if you were to come back and visit me, I'm sure I'll be able to say, 'we did it.'"
