Fresh Produce Program


Since 1997, the Fresh Produce Program has sourced and delivered millions of pounds of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables to the people served by the San Antonio Food Bank.

To continue to meet the ever increasing produce needs of our clients, the San Antonio Food Bank opened a free-standing and fully equipped Produce Shed in Pearsall, TX. This nationally recognized and award winning off-site shed is located on the eastern edge of the produce rich Winter Garden Area of South Texas. Working closely with farmers, growers, packing sheds, and shippers, the Fresh Produce Program uses various techniques to source quality produce, such as :i.e. Field, Truck, and Shed gleanings, as well as employing PPO (Pick and Pack Out) product opportunities.

How Can You Help?

By expanding needs in the San Antonio Food Bank service area to provide more nutritious food to people in need of food assistance, the financial requirements increase. Produce in Texas is always time and temperature sensitive. To operate and maintain refrigerated trucks and pay utility costs of the large coolers required to gather, transport, and distribute such large amounts of produce, the San Antonio Food Bank relies on the benevolence of various donors. The Fresh Produce Program is also seeking new farmer / growers wishing to donate additional product.
