Things are moving fast in the San Antonio Food Bank Capital Campaign! Our goal of $8 million to build a new facility has been achieved, but we still need you to make it a reality. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility, located at State Highway 151 and Old Highway 90, is at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005.

We’ve got the land we need, as the Food Bank signed a contract on a 15-acre track of land at Highway 151 and Callaghan earlier this year. This location will give our agencies, donors, and volunteers easy access to our facility. We’ll also be able to grow our facility as the demand for food increases across our 16-county service area. As we begin construction, there is still a need for pledges and in-kind gifts to help us cover additional costs and help us move towards building a future without hunger. We thank all the individuals, corporations, groups, etc., that have helped us so far.

But the need is great. Demand will always increase and new opportunities for program development will come. The food bank can no longer function efficiently in its undersized and retrofitted warehouse space – plans must be made for the future demand by building a warehouse that is the right tool for the ever-increasing and important job.

The timing is right for this ambitious endeavor. The SAFB has the opportunity to build our new facility in partnership with Prichard & Associates, Inc., volunteers from HEB Grocery Company, and other food industry experts. This will facilitate the building of the facility needed at a considerable cost savings, resulting in a smart investment in our organization and in our community.

Last year, we distributed 25 million pounds of food to more than 400 member agencies. We’re barely scratching the surface of the problem of hunger in our communities, and the ultimate goal is to be able to process more than 40 million pounds of food each year by 2010.

But we’re not going to be able to do it in a facility we’ve simply outgrown. After our humble beginnings 25 years ago at 108 Vitra, and then moving to bigger accommodations at 4311 Director Drive, the time has come again for an upgrade. Right now, we’re the 18th largest food bank in the country, distributing food to emergency shelters, childcare centers, programs for the elderly, after school programs, soup kitchens, and food pantries directly serving the people in need. The food bank has now reached a critical moment in its history and we are reaching out to our community to make the future even brighter for the countless thousands of people who need our services every day.

Supporting the San Antonio Food Bank makes good sense. It’s a smart investment, where every dollar donated not only returns many pounds of food to needy people but also provides a collaborative approach to respond to the community’s most basic need.

The food bank has a proven track record of fiscally sound management, effective leadership and steadfast support fro people in need. We have listened to the community’s needs and determined how we can respond. We have assembled the finest team to design and manage the construction process in the most responsible way. And by undertaking this capital campaign, we have demonstrated our commitment to investing in the future of our community.

Hunger hurts more than the hungry … it affects us all. What will you do to make that pain go away? With your help, we can fight hunger and feed hope in Southwest Texas.
