Warehouse Sorting and Packing Volunteer

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
Shift 1: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
Shift 2: 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
Shift 3: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (Wednesday)
Who: Individuals and groups of up to 65 volunteers on weekdays and up to 200 volunteers on Saturdays.
Age requirement: Minimum age is flexible with adult supervision.
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse environment.
Job Description: Groups and individuals work together to sort and/or pack produce, nonperishable foods, and household items, preparing them for distribution. Duties may include checking for expiration dates, opened packages and spoilage, labeling cans, packing bags of food and household items. Other duties may include general cleaning of the area, breaking down boxes, etc.  This project is fun and rewarding for both adults and children!

Kids Cafe

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: September – May
Shift 1: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Monday – Friday)
Shift 2: 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM (Monday – Thursday)
Who:  Individuals and groups of up to 10 volunteers.
Age requirement: 16 years of age
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a kitchen environment.
Job Description: This program prepares and distributes breakfast and after school snacks to schools and partner agencies. Volunteers will receive a briefing on the day’s meals to be distributed to Kid’s Cafe sites, issue and document the pick-up of meals, load meals into hot/cold holding containers, accurately document times that meals were picked up, and that equipment was issued and returned. Volunteers will also assist with kitchen cleanup duties as requested by the Executive Chef:  wash, sanitize and store kitchen tools and equipment, prep for next day’s meal, sweep, mop and store supplies as needed.

Summer Feeding Program

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: June – August
Shift 1: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM (Monday – Thursday)
Shift 2: 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM (Monday – Thursday)
Who: Individuals and groups of up to 30 volunteers per shift.
Age requirement: 16 years of age
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a kitchen environment.
Job Description: This program prepares and distributes breakfast, lunch, and snacks for children on summer vacation. Volunteers will receive a briefing on the day’s meal(s) to be distributed to Summer Food Service Program sites; issue and document Summer Food Service Program meals, load meals into hot/cold holding containers; accurately document times that meals were picked-up, equipment was returned and issued; wash, clean, sanitize & store kitchen tools, containers & equipment. Assist with general pick-up/clean-up as needed & requested by Executive Chef: wash, sanitize and store kitchen tools and equipment, prep for next day’s meal, sweep, mop and store supplies as needed.

Haven for Hope

Where: 1 Haven For Hope Way
When: Open 365 days a year
Shift 1: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Shift 2: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Shift 3: 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Who: Individuals and groups of up to 10 volunteers during the week and 25 volunteers on the weekends.
Age requirement: 15 years of age
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a kitchen environment.
Job Description: Volunteers assist with the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for residents of Haven for Hope. Other kitchen duties include, but not limited to:  all aspects of kitchen clean up; dishwashing, sweeping, mopping. Volunteers will also greet the residents as they arrive for their meals.  Help people experiencing homelessness in our community!

Community Garden & Property Beautification

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: Tuesday – Saturday
Shift 1: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Who: Individuals and groups of up to 25 volunteers. (Larger groups can be accommodated with advance notice.)
Age requirement: 14 years of age
Dress Code: For safety, absolutely no sandals or flip-flops, please wear closed-toed shoes. Dress for the weather. Volunteers may want to bring gloves.
Job Description: This is a 27 acre working garden, cultivating fresh produce to provide healthy, nutritious fresh foods for distribution. Volunteers work as a group to assist the farmer with planting, harvesting, caring for, and cleaning fruits, vegetables, and other edible plants. Other duties may include composting, weeding, digging, hoeing and watering in the field. At times assistance is needed with landscape and property clean up. Come and get your hands in the dirt!
Please Note:  Volunteer sessions could be cancelled due to weather. Should a cancellation occur we will attempt to provide another volunteer opportunity, but if the sessions are full you may be asked to come back another day. Individual’s sensitive to bee stings should not volunteer in the garden.

Mobile Pantry Volunteer

Where: In and around the San Antonio area
When: Time and days vary, mostly during the weekdays. Events in Bexar County normally last 4 hours.
Who: Individuals and groups of 10 or less volunteers
Age Requirement: 15 years of age
Dress Code: For safety, absolutely no sandals or flip-flops, please wear closed-toed shoes. These events are outside so dress for the weather. Volunteers may want to bring gloves.
Job Descriptions: Volunteers assist the Mobile Pantry Coordinator by breaking down pallets of product, packing bags if necessary and handing out product to clients. Volunteers will also collect vouchers from clients and help with traffic control, verify clients have vouchers before receiving product, if a client does not have a voucher then qualify client and assisting them with voucher, as directed. Duties will also include cleaning up the area and stacking pallets and trash into truck. Events usually last around 3-4 hours. Get a group of 5-10 volunteers together to help distribute groceries where they are needed!

Agency Store Volunteer

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
Who: Individuals (Preferably men)
Age requirement: 18 years of age
Dress Code: Due to safety concerns all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse environment.
Job Description: Assist Agency Relations staff in restocking and arranging edible and non-edible food items. Checking dates as instructed. Other warehouse duties include, but not limited to: sweeping, trash pickup, mopping and general clean-up of work areas.

The Kitchen Table Volunteer in New Braunfels

Where: 651 N Business 35, Suite 340, New Braunfels, TX 78130

Job Description: Based on the healthy plate model, this client choice food pantry allows clients to select healthy food items. Volunteers assist with client welcome, shelve and stock food products, and client check out. Volunteers may also be asked to clean work areas, stack boxes and pallets, assist with various class preparations, clerical work, etc. This project is fun and rewarding for both adults and children!

Administrative Services Volunteer

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: Mondays through Fridays 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Additional dates and times upon request.
Who: Individuals/Small groups
Age requirement: 18 years of age
Dress Code: Volunteers should wear clothing that is tasteful and appropriate for a professional work environment.
Job Description: Volunteers are needed for a variety of administrative tasks including internet research, letter folding, stapling pamphlets, data entry, answering phones, etc.  Your skills can help the staff in valuable ways!

APPLE CORP-Volunteer Leadership Opportunities

Where: San Antonio Food Bank
When: Tuesday – Saturdays
Who: Individuals. All volunteers require prescreening and willingness to make at least a three month commitment to a regular schedule.
Job Description: Lead tours of our facility and provide general information about the Food Bank’s programs and services. On a daily basis, teach, lead and mentor volunteers for warehouse sorting projects of up to 65 volunteers.  This position requires an outgoing personality and experience working with diverse populations including persons with special needs. Excellent verbal and motivational communication skills are needed. A willingness to speak in public and must be professional at all times. This opportunity is perfect for retirees and students that are off for the summer & holidays.
